Our garden rooms are built to last, and we want to ensure you get the very most out of your space for years to come. Every one of our garden rooms is supplied with a comprehensive 12-year guarantee, reflecting the quality of materials and care that goes into each build.
While they are designed for year-round use, a few simple aftercare steps and routine maintenance checks will help protect your investment and keep it looking and performing at its best.
Here is a practical guide covering the essential steps to take once installation is complete, along with ongoing maintenance advice.
Allow Plaster to Fully Dry
After plastering is completed, good ventilation is essential. Keep windows and doors open where possible to allow fresh air to circulate and moisture to escape naturally.
Plaster typically takes at least one week to dry in summer conditions and up to two weeks during colder months. Decorating should only begin once walls are fully dry to prevent cracking, peeling or trapped moisture.
Use Gentle, Consistent Heating
During colder or damp weather, moderate heating can help the drying process. Heat should be steady and not excessive, as rapid drying may cause surface cracking.
Combining gentle heat with proper ventilation will create the best conditions for the plaster to set smoothly and evenly, ensuring a strong, long-lasting finish that’s ready for decorating once fully dried.
Doors and Windows
To keep fittings operating smoothly:
Lubricate hinges annually
Check handles and locking mechanisms
Adjust doors if minor settling causes slight misalignment
Routine attention reduces long-term wear and ensures continued smooth operation.
Exterior Timber Care (Western Red Cedar)
Western Red Cedar is chosen for its natural durability and warm appearance. When left untreated, it will gradually weather to a silver-grey tone. This natural ageing process doesn’t affect the durability of the timber but does change its appearance over time.
For those who prefer to maintain the original reddish-brown colour, a clear UV protection oil can be applied. This helps to slow down the weathering process, preserving the cedar’s fresh look while still allowing the wood to breathe and perform naturally outdoors. Brands such as OSMO and FIDES supply good clear UV protection oil. We recommend apply 2-3 coats. If you want to preserve the original timber colour apply as soon after completion of your build.
Gutters:
If your garden room includes gutters, it’s important to keep them well-maintained by regularly clearing out leaves, moss, and other debris. Blocked gutters can cause rainwater to overflow, leading to staining on the cladding, damp issues, or even structural damage if water is allowed to pool around the base of the building.
By keeping gutters clear, you ensure proper drainage and protect your garden room from unnecessary wear and tear. This simple maintenance task not only prevents potential water damage but also helps prolong the lifespan of the structure, keeping it looking its best and performing well all year round.
Appliance Safety:
Always switch off electrical appliances when not in use to conserve energy and enhance safety.
