Garden Room Sanctuary / Projects

Cumbria Garden Room

We’re delighted to share our recent Garden Room project, located in the beautiful Barrow in Furness in Cumbria. The brief was to create a smart, usable space at the bottom of the garden that could be enjoyed year-round. Measuring 4m x 3m, the room is designed to be compact while avoiding intrusion into the garden. Starting from our classic Malhamdale model, the garden room was adapted with an air conditioning unit, bespoke lighting and even a cat flap.

Although we faced some challenging weather during the installation, the team worked hard to ensure the project was completed on schedule.

A big thank you to Jane for leaving us such a wonderful review.

Fabulous job, watched every stage of the build, couldn’t believe the work that went into it.

Top class carpentry & the guys were, focused, hard working, long days working in the crappy English February weather. Nice friendly chilled out guys who obviously take pride in delivering a top quality product.

The Build Process

Step 1 – Manufacture and Structure

The project began with the manufacture, supply and assembly of the Malhamdale Garden Room, constructed to a footprint of 4m x 3m.

The structure was engineered to deliver strength, durability and excellent thermal performance. The floor, walls and roof were installed with 100mm of acoustic and PIR insulation, ensuring the garden room remains comfortable and energy efficient throughout the year.

Step 2 – Exterior Features

To enhance both appearance and functionality, several external features were incorporated during the build.

A 1-metre redwood decking area was installed to the front of the building, providing an attractive outdoor transition space between the garden and the room.

Above the entrance, a 1-metre projecting canopy was added, creating architectural depth while offering shelter from the elements.

The exterior of the garden room was finished with Western Red Cedar cladding, chosen for its natural beauty, durability and ability to age gracefully over time.

Step 3 – Roofing System

The building was completed with an insulated composite box profile roof finished in anthracite grey.

This roofing system offers excellent weather protection and durability while maintaining the contemporary aesthetic of the structure. Matching anthracite grey roof trims were installed to provide a clean and cohesive finish.

Rainwater is managed via black guttering with a rear downpipe, discreetly integrated into the overall design.

Step 4 – Windows and Doors

To maximise natural light and create a strong connection to the garden, large glazed elements were incorporated into the design.

The main entrance features a 2.5m UPVC French door with 500mm side panes, finished in anthracite grey externally with a white interior frame.

A 0.6m x 1.6m top-hung window was also installed to allow additional natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy and thermal efficiency.

Step 5 – Interior Finishing

Inside the garden room, the walls were lined with plasterboard and finished with a smooth plaster coat to both walls and ceiling, creating a crisp, modern interior ready for decoration.

The floor was completed using oak V-groove laminate flooring, providing warmth and durability. This was paired with pre-painted MDF skirting boards to give the space a polished, professional finish.

Step 6 – Electrical Installation

The room was fitted with a practical and modern electrical layout designed to support a variety of uses.

The installation includes:

  • 4 double power sockets

  • 1 ceiling bar light with four adjustable spotlights

  • 3 external canopy lights

  • 1 x 1.5kW panel heater

  • White fuse box

All switches and sockets were finished in brushed chrome, complementing the contemporary interior design.

Step 7 – Climate Control

To ensure year-round comfort, the garden room was equipped with a dedicated air conditioning unit. This system allows the room to remain cool during warmer months while also providing additional heating capability when required.

The Result

The completed Malhamdale Garden Room delivers a stylish and highly functional garden space. The combination of Western Red Cedar cladding, anthracite detailing and large glazed doors creates a modern exterior that blends beautifully with the garden surroundings.

Inside, the insulated structure, plastered finish and quality flooring provide a comfortable and versatile environment that can be used as a home office, studio or relaxation space.

The result is a high-spec garden sanctuary, just a few steps from the main home.
