If you have a garden room that you want to use year-round, you have to think about heating. As a standalone structure, garden rooms are inevitably exposed to the elements on all sides. So, if you want to create a warm workspace, gym, or even spare bedroom, there are a few factors you need to consider.
Tips for Keeping Your Garden Room Warm this Winter
Insulation
At Garden Room Sanctuary, we insulate our garden rooms as standard. For us, producing high-quality garden rooms that can be fully functional throughout the year is a point of pride. But not all producers are the same. Because people want garden rooms for different reasons. If your garden room is to be a glorified summer house, insulation may not be relevant. Although it can also work to keep out the heat. But if you are planning to use your garden room on a permanent basis, insulation is a must.
Double glazing
Again, this is something that needs to be thought about before construction. But if you want to keep your garden room comfortable throughout the year, high quality glazing is essential. For the maximum thermal protection, window and door glazing should have a U value of below 1.6 W/m²K. All of our glazing has a U value of 1.2. This is to ensure that our structures stay as warm as possible. If you don’t have high quality glazing in your garden room, you can install secondary glazing or window film. However, this is unlikely to be as effective as installing high quality glazing to begin with.
Install heaters
You can heat a garden room in much the same way that you can heat other structures. We offer electric heaters with our garden rooms because they tend to be more energy efficient. They’re also a safe heating solution. But there are other options. A wood burning stove can be deeply appealing if you like the log cabin aesthetic. Solar heating is both energy efficient and cost-effective in the longer term. Plug-in oil filled or ceramic radiators provide a mobile and versatile solution, although they can be expensive to run. While underfloor heating can work well if you integrate it during construction.
Use your furnishings
A well-made garden room shouldn’t allow draughts. However, there’s still more you can do to keep your garden room warm. Adding rugs or carpet can enhance the insulation of the floor. Thermal curtains can retain heat in cold weather – and reflect heat out of the room in summer. Soft furnishings always feel warmer than hard.
If you’re investing in a garden room for your home, you should be able to use it throughout the year. Because it is an investment. A quality garden room should be akin to a home extension – an asset that gives you value and functionality throughout the year. At Garden Room Sanctuary, we know that. That’s why we do everything we can to make our structures as durable, thermally protected, and comfortable as possible.
